It’s back to school: Time for summer reading!

Remember all those books you bought for those lazy days that never came? Me too! I’ve made it to page 55 of Annabel Monaghan’s “Nora Goes Off Script” (on sale here!) The main character is a single mom, which fills me with awe every time. In one scene, a Crock Pot makes her feel triumphant. That’s because it is a victory getting dinner done by 9 pm.

Dinner’s going to be good and bad around here. Good because we can eat whatever we want; bad because, no kids. I got served up a heap of turmoil this summer, navigating how to “parent” when your young adult kid comes home from college. My biggest learning: How about shutting the hell up? If she wants your advice, she’ll ask you.

So now what I do is ask her what she plans to do with…classes, t-shirts and that condom stuffed in the fuse box at her on-campus apartment (We didn’t ask. Because it was a Magnum, I figured hopeful freshmen boys lived there last semester.)

The best news ever is: our son said he misses us. We’re going to meet him tonight for dinner where he’s doing an internship an hour away. That’s it. No other plans, except the usual laundry, Trader’s and dog obeying. Have a great weekend doing something lazy. Maybe you’ll like one of these books I haven’t read. “Backyard Guide to the Birds of North America” promises to be a real nail-biter.
